DAY 28
Psalm 27:1-4
Light is amazing. Made up of electricity and magnetism, it is one of the most fundamental things in all of God’s creation. Because of light, we can appreciate those beautiful sunsets, the smile of a family member and feel the heat of a fire. In fact, without light, there would not be any life here on earth at all!
But the light that David speaks of here is different to the light that we see with our eyes; it’s God’s light. Here are 3 things that David unpacks for us about God’s light:
Firstly, there is REFUGE in God’s light. There are great promises in these verses about God’s protection and the courage we can have in the midst of adversity. But the key is in the first verse: “The Lord is my LIGHT”…If we want to avail of the promises of His protection and to walk confidently through adversity we must be living IN His light. God cannot bless what is in the darkness; when we step outside His will and are living contrary to His Word then we are vulnerable to attack.
Secondly, God’s light is also our REST. Jesus says in Matthew 11:29-30: “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” In God’s upside-down-right-way-up world, His burden is light. God’s Will is not that we should be weary, anxious, worried, depressed or fearful – but that our souls know His rest and peace. There is an ease and refreshment for our weariness, that comes when we accept His yoke. He wants our burden to be His light. He wants us to be at peace.
Thirdly, we are to REFLECT God’s light: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14. When we are living in His light and when our burdens are His light then we will reflect His light. We have been called, equipped and commissioned to reflect His light to a broken and hurting world – just as the moon reflects the glory of the sun. We have no light and no glory in and of ourselves – but when we turn our face to Him we can reflect His!
So how on earth do we do all this? “The one thing I ask of the Lord — the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple (v4).” It’s ONE thing. What are you chasing? What is the deepest desire within your heart? What motivates you? What are you seeking the most?
Light living is found when our ‘one thing’ is His presence!
Want to live in God’s refuge and protection?
Want to live in God’s rest and peace?
Want to live as a reflection of His heart to those around us?
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33
