‘We love Him because He first loved us.’ (1 John 4:19 KJV)

‘If you love Me, keep My commandments.’ (John 14:15 KJV)

One day a lawyer came to Jesus and asked, ‘What is the greatest commandment?’ Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This love is not focused on emotions. It is love that is walked out in wholehearted obedience and devotion to Jesus through living out His instructions.

‘If you love me, keep my commands…He who has my commands and keeps them, it is he who loves me.’ (John 14:15-23 KJV)

Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we be supernaturally empowered to love God (Romans 5:5 KJV). His power enables us to live faithful lives, choosing to love Him fully with all that we are and all that we have. Even in the midst of family and daily demands, it is still possible to grow in love for Jesus in every area of life through His strength. ‘Love Him with all my heart? How?’ By guarding our hearts and refusing to allow our emotions to be tied up in wrong relationships, sinful addictions, bitterness, offence and so on. Keep your heart focused and clean! We can love Him with all our mind. Our mind is the doorway to our inner man. It greatly affects our capacity to love. Much of our life occurs in our mind. When we fill our mind with Scripture and thoughts that inspire love for God, our capacity to love Jesus increases. Stay in the Word!

As we obey God’s Word, we cultivate passion for our God and encounter His love for us. ‘We love Him because He first loved us.’ (1 John 4:19 KJV). Where does love come from? It comes from being overwhelmed by being loved by God, my Heavenly Father. It comes from being thankful. The Lord Jesus died on our behalf and rose again. When that grips you, you taste what it is to treasure Jesus, delight in Jesus and be satisfied in Jesus. So let’s praise Him. How?

Think about and meditate on the attributes of God. Here’s a few to think about.

God is good all the time. He is kind, He is smiling on us through Jesus. God is merciful – He does not give us what we deserve, which is eternal death for our sins. He offers life in abundance and a place near to Him, just beside Him, in fact. ‘In the shelter of His wing.’ (Psalm 91:1 KJV). God is faithful – totally reliable, stable, secure. He is faithful to care for us and give us victory over temptation (1Corinthians 10:13 KJV). He is faithful to forgive us (1 John 1:9 KJV) and God is not ever going to change (Hebrews 13:8 KJV). Sometimes I just want to hug Him and other times I need that hug from Him, reassuring me of His love.

So today, think of two things to praise God for. Is there something you need to obey? Most of all enjoy loving Him who first loved you.
