As a teacher, my job is full of demands and challenges. Every day I am faced with young people who are battling some of the most difficult circumstances. Challenges such as insecurity, emotional needs, poor health, broken homes, rejection, issues with sexuality and self-harm to name but a few.

For some young people, I may be one of the only stable relationships in their lives and I find more and more, these young people are willing to share their stories with me, even when it’s painful. You could argue it’s because I’m their favourite teacher, but I don’t believe for a second this is the reason. It’s because of the spirit of the Living God upon me. He has equipped me to be a voice of hope in my sphere of influence. He is using me, right where I am.

God calls all of us to be obedient and follow his lead. He has already pre-packed us with everything we need to be effective in our world. Isaiah 61:1- 2 says, ‘The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the broken-hearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favour has come, and with it the day of God’s anger against their enemies.’ (KJV)

Put simply, this verse means God has anointed us (you and me) to be the voice of his hope in our world. He has equipped me uniquely for my sphere of influence, and he has equipped you for yours. He has anointed you to be the voice of hope. He says, ‘You are the light of the world,” (Matt 5:14 KJV).

Reading this, you may struggle to believe God can – or even wants – to use you. But can I encourage you to engage with the word of God. Our scripture for today clearly states that you are anointed! The spirit of the Lord is upon you! Walk in the confidence that God can, and will move through you. You need only to be willing and available. In every situation – yours or that of someone in your world – pray and ask the Holy Spirit, your helper, to guide you, and watch how He does. Read this scripture out loud over yourself, say it every day if you have to. Be empowered by its truth!

Maybe you’re reading this and don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Your world is on top of you and you’re confronted with challenging circumstances, maybe even impossibilities. If this is you, why not ask Jesus into your heart? Why not begin a life-giving relationship with God and see how He can change your life? He wants to show you who he is, and who you really are. Hewants to use you to do amazing things. Things beyond your wildest dreams (Eph 3:20 KJV).
